Labuan Bajo is a small town nestled in western part of Flores, Indonesia. It used to be a fishing village but now it’s a thriving hub for Indonesian tourism. Labuan Bajo is just a lazy, laid-back town by the beach, however, it is the launching point for big adventures and exciting experiences for travelers. If you are wondering what to do in Labuan Bajo, then fret not as there are plenty of things to do in Labuan Bajo for your perfect Flores itinerary. My trip to Labuan Bajo Indonesia last month was simply incredible. It was part of the “Trip of Wonders” organized by Ministry of Tourism, Indonesia along with 35 other bloggers and influencers. With so much to do, see and experience, this place left me amazed and wanting more. I created this list from my own experiences and the places I was lucky enough to see in my short 3 days there. Pretty sure there are many more islands, beaches and interesting places to visit in Labuan Bajo- which means, I need to come back soon to explore more! Experiencing local culture at Melo Village Kampung Melo was our first stop in Labuan Bajo. After a traditional warm welcome by the Manggarai, we witnessed an array of cultural performances, relished local Manggarai cuisine and experienced their way of life. Warm welcome by The Manggarai people The villagers make the complicated process of Ikat weaving look like child’s play. Their traditional bamboo pole game, Caci dance and various other forms of dancing were quite enjoyable and make for the perfect half day tour. The Caci dance is perhaps the most integral part of their culture. It is a whip fight where male members of the Manggarai hold a whip and shield in either hands to demonstrate the philosophical values and beliefs of their tribe. The entire village is involved and comes to life with the sound of chants, songs and bells. Men preparing for the Caci dance ritual Visiting Komodo National park Komodo national park was the most sought after stop in the itinerary for me and luckily, it did not disappoint. The park is home to over 4000 Komodo monitor lizards and hence tops the list of Labuan Bajo things to do, hands down. Time to meet the dragons Komodo island is the only place in the world where you can see these dragons and hence makes for one of the most popular day trips from Labuan Bajo…And let me tell you, these lizards are massive. So, you WILL be amazed! The mighty Komodo dragons I was especially respectful of these majestic creatures when I heard man-eating encounters of Komodo dragons in the park. There had been 2 incidents where humans were prey to these dominant predators who are fast and agile. They ambush their prey using their natural camouflage and watch their prey with patience before pouncing with their strong claws in teeth. It is no wonder that sometimes, they can even take down large animals like water buffaloes. With Shane aka Travel Camel as we hear Komodo stories of horror from the ranger If you don’t believe me, watch this video of these powerful Komodo dragons hunting their prey – Yes, even buffaloes, goats, deer, cobra and pigs! Chilling at the Pink beach Pink beach, locally known as Pantai Merahis gets it’s name from Foraminifera which look like tiny pink corals and are spread all around the beach giving it a pink tinch, especially on the shoreline. This beach forms part of most picture post cards and is one of the best Labuan Bajo attractions for tourists from across the globe. Pink beach with the tinted pink shoreline It is the perfect place for a dip, sun bathing, hiking, sunset watching or snorkeling. A perfect spot to enjoy the view Wait you can even pose at the pink beach. Look at these wonderful blue layers of water in the ocean, making for an excellent backdrop. Posing at the pink beach Cruising through Kalong Island As our first day at Labuan came to and end, we decided to enjoy the melting sun on our speed boat. I was surprised to see millions of bats flying foxes hovering around as the sun set and realized we were just next to the famous “Bat island”. This was quite an experience with the bats flying around as the sun sets in the horizon and the waves cradle our boat. Another one of the amazing Labuan Bajo day trips which can be easily combined with the Pink beach and other nearby attractions of this exotic island. Bats hovering over the mangroves 24 hours of sailing experience With so many Labuan Bajo activities to choose from and enjoy, this was by far the highlight of my Indonesian escapade. If you happen to be in Labuan Bajo, don’t miss this chance to get live on board a lovely sail boat and cruise through the islands. You will be surrounded by epic beauty and enjoy many adventures/ activities in Labuan Bajo whilst at it. One of the 3 boats we rented for 24 hours! Here are some of the things we did while onboard “Phinisi Felicia” – Snorkeling in Kanawa island Okay so I didn’t find nemo this time but many of these lovely blue star fish Labuan Bajo with its clear blue green waters and mesmerizing scenic views, offers a vivid underwater life as well. I was amazed at the variety of coral reefs and fish I saw in these stunning waters. For me, this was the best snorkeling experience ever. Hell yeah, I can take selfies when I snorkel lol Exploring Mesa Village Next on our list of things to do around Labuan Bajo was a short stop to experience this village on stilts. Mesa village consists of over 1500 people and they don’t have any fresh water at all. With the wonderful Mesa village kids. Photo credits flyingeisha From what I hear, the villagers are scared of mosquitoes Dengue and hence they stopped accumulating water in any form through the years, since we all know mosquitoes breed in water. As per the villagers though, this is just one of the stories that has been passed on through generations and no one really knows how much truth it holds! Cute houses at the Mesa Village What surprised me most in this village was the fact that all kids were so friendly. They would not hesitate to hold your hand and walk with you as you explore the village and their parents were very supportive of their kids wandering off with strangers. I don’t see this trust a lot while traveling and its heart warming and surprising, both at the same time. These adorable kids won’t leave my hand even when I am taking a picture Ÿ™‚ Hiking up Padar Island Okay this is definitely a “must-do” if you are in Komodo. During our night at the boat, we made a stop to enjoy sunset from top of Padar island. It was the best decision ever, as this made my entire trip worthwhile – seriously! This is how it feels to be on top of the world – what a view! I kept hearing how steep and difficult the hike was but I was determined to make it to the top. In all honestly, I would rate it as a moderate but steep climb which I enjoyed to the fullest. Taking pictures and soaking in the beauty of Padar while climbing up. The best part was when I found my own spot, isolated from the hoards of tourists and photographers, waiting in anticipation for the sun to set. It took some effort and grass blade cuts, to walk on unpaved paths to reach the tip of a cliff but as you can see from these pictures, it was totally worth it and the 30 mins I spent looking at this exotic scenery, were surely some of the best moments of my life. Labuan Bajo to Padar island forms one of the most popular day trips but to fully experience the beauty of this island, I would highly recommend getting on the boat and just stop as you please – literally! Star gazing Onboard Felicia, we had a lovely sun deck with lounge bean bags. It was a great place to dance, chat and do some yoga during the day. At night, it was a different ball game all together. As the night approached, I could see the sky light up with millions of stars.. and soon we could see the milky way with our naked eyes. I was so mesmerized by this scene that I was the last one to go to sleep that night. After all, how many times does it happen that you are on a boat amidst untouched natural beauty and get to gaze at a clear sky full of stars and gawk at the milky way? Well, it was surely a first for me! Jumping off boats Yes! That’s a thing and also a must try’ experience. Since we were on our lovely exotic Felicia, many fellow members jumped off the boat into the inviting blue green waters. Where to stay in Labuan Bajo Jayakarta Suites Komodo Flores – The best part of Jayakarta for me was the pool with the strategically placed huge chess board by it. The fact that it is right next to the beach and offers amazing room views, is definitely a big bonus. Plus you can try traditional food Labuan Bajo during your stay at Jayakarta suites. Get on-board Phinisi private boats to sail away to glory at Labuan Bajo. Surely one of the best things to do in Labuan island. Labuan Bajo Attractions To Add to your Itinerary Even though I haven’t personally tried these. You might want to add these to your Labuan Bajo Flores itinerary. Batu Cermin Cave Located in the dark stone hills of Labuan Bajo, Batu Cermin Cave also locally known as Mirror Rock is an excellent local attraction that must be on your things to do in Labuan Bajo list. Here the sunshine penetrates the tunnel through a small hole and bounces off the stone walls that reflect small lights to brighten up other areas of the cave like a mirror effect. Here you can capture some great Instagram-worthy shots that you would cherish for years to Loh Liang National Park While the Komodo National Park located on Flores Island is a popular vacation hotspot, Loh Liang National Park should be on your list if you are interested in watching more komodo dragons in their natural Rangko Cave Nestled in the Rangko Village, you can find the Goa Rangko cave which is another great attraction that you shouldn’t miss when you are visiting Labuan Bajo. This Labuan Bajo attraction has crystal clear blue water that comes to life when the sunlight hits the water. Visiting this cave during afternoon hours would be ideal to ensure there is enough light. Kelor Island While you are exploring the Komodo Islands you can also take a break and head to Kelor Island which offers a great relaxing vibe like no other. Locally, known as Pulau Kelor, this is part of Komodo National Park. You can enjoy the uninhabited beach and also hike up the small mountain that offers you a stunning panoramic view of the beach. You can access the island by boat from Labuan Bajo. Waecicu Beach Located in West Manggarai Regency, Flores, Waecicu Beach is an excellent beach that has many luxury resorts and hotels nearby. This beach offers quiet and calm blue waters which are perfect for those who want private time to chill and unwind. Here you can swim, snorkel, dive and ride a rowboat or just sit back and enjoy the sea Taka Makassar Island Known as the Maldives of Indonesia, this small island has instantly gained a lot of popularity as people are attracted to its shallow turquoise waters. This Labuan Bajo attraction lies in the middle of the sea and must be on your things to do  Amelia Sea View If you love some hiking, heading to Amelia sea view spot is a great option. Once you are at Komodo Island you can look for paths that lead up to the spot. With the best formation of hills from the top, you can have a great panoramic view of Komodo Island. You can visit this spot either during the sunrise or sunset time to make the most of your hike trip. Rinca Island Considered one of the hidden gems of eastern Indonesia, the UNESCO-recognized Komodo National Park is a popular tourist destination in Labuan Bajo. Rinca Island is one of the islands that host the park and has the largest population of komodo dragons making it one of the important things to do Labuan Bajo. Tripadvisor performs checks on husband and I booked a private boat for our three-day, two-night tour of Komodo National Park and its surroundings, paying $1200 for the boat park fees were additional. Overall we felt Doddy did an excellent job of organizing our excursion, delivering exactly what he had promised. Our guide, Robert, was thoughtful and conscientious, and the crew worked hard to run the boat and deliver decent meals. We experienced some electrifying encounters with Komodo Dragons and experienced many other unforgettable moments. I should caution that for what we paid, the accommodations were hardly luxurious. When booking my tour, I just asked the price, got an answer from Doddy, and figured that was that. Now that I’ve been there, I think maybe I should have gotten more information about what a somewhat more upgraded experience would cost. Clearly there are many boat options in Labuan Bajo. In terms of operators, however, we felt that Doddy and his organization were reliable, responsible, seasoned. We had a fantastic guide, who helped us with all of our questions and also guided us during all the activities. The boat team worked tirelessly to ensure all of our needs were catered to. We were well fed with plenty of snacks throughout the day and the food was lovely. The highlight of our trip was snorkelling with Manta Rays, spotted by the captain who very kindly stopped and allowed us to jump in and snorkel with them. Great, helpful guides. Well organized. Last stop was to “chillâ€â€”could have skipped this stop and snorkeled at a better organized, crammed schedule, but you may see tour was very disorganized and tried to cram too much into a day. The 600am pick up was late. When we arrived at the departure site no coffee, beverage, or food of any kind was provided. The boat was comfortable and in good condition but lacked full of people. The visit to Padar Island was perfect for time and Instagramable views. The Pink Beach seemed like filler but at least we could buy fried noodles and coffee. The visit to Komodo Island was great in that we saw several Komodo dragons, but we were not allowed any options before arriving we were told we. Oils do one of two hikes as long as we were back in time for the departure. The next stop for snorkeling was 30 min and too short to be of value. The snorkeling at Manta Point was fine but also short it would have been better to go straight from Komodo Island to Manta Point and have more time there the final stop was long enough to relax and have a drink. When we returned to the departure point it was chaotic. No vehicles waited for us and it took more than 30 minutes to get the included transport back to the hotel. When I mentioned to my hotel proprietor the experience he called the tour company that said that since I used a third party Viator to purchase the tour I got less service than if I had paid directly. That excuse did not appear to be true given that others at my hotel did book directly and were treated the same. If I had it to do again I would book a private tour to Padar Island and Komodo Island with another company. If I were Viator I would question my relationship with an operator that gave my clients sub par service because my booking oortal was used. This tour gets three stars because I saw a lot of Komodo dragons. That is the only reason. If, as we were told when we set off, we might jot and hadn’t seen dragons, I’d give this 2 stars. Overall we felt Doddy did an excellent job of organizing our excursion, delivering exactly what he had promised. Our guide, Robert, was thoughtful and conscientious, and the crew worked hard to run the boat and deliver decent meals. We experienced some electrifying encounters with Komodo Dragons and experienced many other unforgettable moments. I should caution that for what we paid, the accommodations were hardly luxurious. When booking my tour, I just asked the price, got an answer from Doddy, and figured that was that. Now that I’ve been there, I think maybe I should have gotten more information about what a somewhat more upgraded experience would cost. Clearly there are many boat options in Labuan Bajo. We had a fantastic guide, who helped us with all of our questions and also guided us during all the activities. The boat team worked tirelessly to ensure all of our needs were catered to. We were well fed with plenty of snacks throughout the day and the food was lovely. The guide and boat crew were incredibly helpful and easy to chat with. And we had plenty of time only complicated thing was communication. My first trip was cancelled due to not enough people. But they only told me when I asked again for the pick up time for next morning. Then it startet postponing, confirming, 30 min later postponing again for the next days. The 6 islands was nice, but I would prefer only 3 locations to include Komodo. The boat ride was nice and scenic, but I didn’t feel comfortable getting off or on the boat, the crew was there to assist but they could use some additional safety equipment to avoid slipping on the boats. This tour is completely private we were two families, eight people and well worth it! They picked us up in the boat at our hotel harbor at 7am and we had a lovely day of island hopping, hiking, snorkeling, and of course close encounters with dinosaurs on Jurassic island itself. There are so many advantages to being in a private group, you don't want to come all this way and have to deal with strangers. Another great thing about this tour is that they handle all the payments/permits/registrations of the islands you visit. Other tours do not include the fees and could be a hassle if you're left to register and pay on your own. Tripadvisor performs checks on visited this cave on a private tour. The road trip took an hour and was a small winding road. We saw the occasional monkey cross the road as we made our way to the small coastal town, where we caught a small boat to the cave. The tide was out so we had to fill in time by visiting and swimming from a large sand island. The tide was still low when we arrived at the location of the cave. Our boat was parked 300 meters away from the pier, The walk to the pier in the shallow water, allowed us to wonder at the amount of large two-tone brown starfish scattered all around us. The cave itself has a steep wooden ladder at the entrance. They say it is best to arrive around 10 am as the sun is at the right height to fill the cave with light. We arrived later and the cave was partially filled with light. You need to climb down a rocky surface to the water which may be challenging for some. The experience was well worth the effort. Whilst we could swim in safety, and could see the water's edge in natural light, the back of the cave on our visit was black with no light. For us, this just added to the mystery of the cave. We loved the visit. Tripadvisor performs checks on we had a slow start in the morning few big queues and waiting to get people on board we managed to catch up on schedule and had a wonderful day!The whole crew were nice and helpful, allowing enough time to enjoy the different spots, beaches, snorkelling and photo shoots. Food was surprisingly good and was enough. We had been given also some fruits and choco biscuits with coffee in the afternoon. Enough water for everyone for the duration of the obvious that when it comes to wildlife there are no promises, but we were extremely luck to see all that we went for. Manta rays, coral reefs, Komodo dragons and amazing flora and fauna underwater. Snorkelling equipment was good and also for the ones that couldn’t swim, vests were provided and the crew was keeping an eye on people in water at all felt safe and thoroughly enjoyed our day!
